I’VE DECIDED TO STEAL AN IDEA. Well, it’s
more of a concept and it’s not really stealing. It‘s the “What does your
[insert any object here] say about you” concept. Because of the simple fact
that I am surrounded by them, I have decide to insert 'desk' in the appropriate
location in the previous sentence. Everyone has their own style. We use the
same things on a daily basis, but the different ways we use those daily objects help establish our style. Your style,
and I am not only talking about the clothes you wear, gives everyone a glimpse
into who you are. Therefore, I believe that a person’s desk says a lot about
that particular person and the way they work. I’ve narrowed it down to three
basic categories: the 'mess', the 'organized chaos' and the 'neatness'. Honestly,
this is a very confined way to categorize desks. It should really be looked at
as a spectrum ranging from messy to neat. View the illustration below to better
grasp this difficult concept. J
What I am going to
do is break down the major points on the spectrum. Let us begin with the ‘mess'.
This desk has no
type of organization. Usually, documents roam freely and there is very little
work place. You will find that those that have a ‘mess’ desk, lose things often. There may be times that objects that should
not be on a desk are found, and those that should be on a desk are nowhere in
sight. Not only does the lack of organization make it difficult for a person to
work, but it also reflects poorly on the ‘mess’ desk’s owner. This desk says
that its owner may have a little bit too much on their plate or they simply do
not have organizational skills.
Next up is the ‘organized
chaos’ desk. The owner of this desk is completely aware of the condition their
desk is in. They actually have a system set up, and DO NOT let anyone near their
system. They tend not to lose any documents, and if a loss occurs, it does not happen
often. This desk says that its owner is a multitasker, which aims to please and
perform their job well.
The last stop on
the spectrum is the ‘neatness’. The owner of this desk cannot work in any form
of disorganization. They tend to have an ample amount of organization tools
such as pencil holder, clip holders, paper organizers, and paper baskets. As
soon as one job is completed, the owner MUST clean the desk before moving on to
another project. This desk says that its owner is efficient and has the tools necessary
to succeed. Also, the owner NEVER loses anything.
The points I’ve
briefly touched are just that; points on the spectrum. What I am trying to say
is that there may be times where someone lies between the ‘mess’ and the ‘organized
chaos’, or someone may be closer the ‘organized chaos’ side of the spectrum
than the ‘neatness’.
If you take ANYTHING
from this blog, take this; just like the way you present yourself, your
desk also represents YOU.
