BOISE — Boise police arrested a 24-year-old man after they say he intentionally set fire to a Port-A-Potty Wednesday — and that it wasn't his first offense.

Police responded to a report of the destroyed facility, located near the baseball fields at Liberty Park, around 5 p.m. Wednesday. Officers say one of the walls in the Port-A-Potty had been burned and melted, leaving a hole in the wall and essentially destroying it.

Earlier Wednesday afternoon, an officer had been in Liberty Park for an unrelated reason earlier in the afternoon and had spoken with a man identified as Justin Hess. After the fire, officers located Hess at his residence nearby and found evidence they say links him to the fire.

Officers also say they found evidence that Hess torched another Port-A-Potty at the same Liberty Park location on May 3. During that incident, officers believe Hess lit a Port-A-Potty on fire using a roll of toilet paper.

Hess is charged with felony arson and was booked into the Ada County jail.

Can You Believe This

This is from an ABC News article about America's Poshest Potties:

On the road and looking for a clean and stylish place to -- um, how to put this -- relieve yourself? Well, look no further. Here we have some of America's finest restrooms as determined in an annual contest by Cincinnati-based Cintas Corp., a provider of restroom hygiene products and services.

At first glance, a Jungle Jim's restroom might confuse new customers. What appears to be handicapped-sized port-o-potties at this Fairfield, Ohio, store are actually faux entrances to a hallway, adorned in a jungle motif, leading to an exquisitely decorated 10-stall restroom, complete with flowers, marble, soft green tile, tropical pictures and more. Wow, talk about a surprise.

Isn't that clever????

The Preakness

This article was in last Tuesday's New York Times:

Reining In the Revelry

Published: May 12, 2009

The most peculiar races at the Preakness Stakes have come on the rooftops of the infield porta-potties. Sanguine partygoers would climb atop the first toilet in a row of about 40, then try to reach the last one as people showered them with beer.

Sometimes the sprinters were splashed and sprayed like baseball players celebrating a pennant. But other times, they were also pelted with unopened cans. With the infield’s bring-your-own beer policy, there was plenty to spare. And that made revelers wary of the skies over Pimlico Race Course, which could turn cloudy with a chance of Budweiser.

“I’ve seen people get drilled by people randomly heaving cans of beer,” said Matt Schultz, 29, who lives in Baltimore and has been on the Pimlico infield for the Preakness the past four years. “I saw one girl literally get knocked to the ground by one.”

Organizers of the Preakness Stakes, the second event in horse racing’s Triple Crown, want a tamer experience on Saturday for the 134th running of the race. Fans can no longer bring their own beverages to the infield. Sixteen-ounce beers will be sold for $3.50, and they will come in plastic cups instead of unopened cans.

The track will also sell its signature black-eyed Susans, a mix of vodka, whiskey, sweet-and-sour mix and orange juice. The hope is that with fewer soaring cans, there is less chance of a black-eyed Susan, or Stephen, for that matter.

“Nobody wants to go into the infield and stare over their shoulder all afternoon because they’re worried about being hit by a beer,” said Stephen Salsbury, a sophomore at the University of Virginia.

In the past, when 60,000 people could bring alcohol to this all-day party, impishness was inevitable. But stories of the Preakness infield figured to be sprinkled with hyperbole. Then came YouTube, which has brought the truth to computer screens everywhere. The infield-related online video library is extensive and unsettling.

In addition to the running of the toilets, there are clips of bloody fights and of men yelling for women to remove their shirts. There is video of full beers being smashed on foreheads, as well as people sliding headfirst into coolers.

These incidents made up a small percentage of the infield experience — there were 6 arrests and 126 ejections last year — but YouTube made it hard to look away.

“I wouldn’t be telling the truth if I said those videos didn’t have some impact,” said Tom Chuckas, the president and chief operating officer of the Maryland Jockey Club, which operates Pimlico. “But we believed it was time for a change and to provide entertainment and activities for our guests. And as a sidebar issue about safety, some of the shenanigans had to stop.”

This year, the infield will be host to performances by the bands ZZ Top and Buckcherry, a professional beach volleyball match, a bikini contest, an oxygen bar and a virtual-reality paintball station.

But there will not be coolers filled with store-bought beer, and that has riled 20-somethings who had turned the Preakness infield into Spring Break: Baltimore.

“I’m definitely not going this year, and I don’t know anyone who is,” said James Reiter, 28, of Baltimore. “ZZ Top seems lame to me. Maybe they’re trying to calm things down, but the older people who come to enjoy themselves go to the grandstands, not the infield.”

Chuckas said infield ticket sales were down about 15 percent from this time last year, though he expected potential losses to be offset by the increase in beverage sales. The price of admission remains $50 for tickets bought in advance and $60 for those purchased on race day.

When Johann Gehrmann heard about the restrictions, he started a Facebook group called Boycott Preakness Until They Bring B.Y.O.B. Back to the Infield. The group has more than 1,750 members, and there are more than 20 others like it on the social networking Web site.

One Facebook user created an open invitation for a Preakness infield wake. It said it could be held anywhere in Baltimore except Pimlico Race Course.

“Hopefully, we can get this rule changed back, because people are really upset about it,” said Gehrmann, 25. “I’m just hoping the ticket sales will be terrible and no one will go.”

Chuckas said the Maryland Jockey Club considered changes to the Preakness each year, but he added that a drop in ticket sales would probably not affect the new beverage rule. He said some fans had complained, but he hoped others who shied away from the infield’s past raucousness might now feel comfortable to go.

“I think it’s still a party, it’s the people’s party,” Chuckas said. “The average age may creep up a little bit, and I think it will be a more controlled atmosphere.”

Though fans will not be allowed to fill coolers with their own drinks, a $3.50 beer remains cheaper than those at most major sporting events. Bottled water will cost $1.

There is no drink limit, and Chuckas said security would not be increased. But fans said their frustration stemmed from the loss of a tradition.

“It used to kind of belong to Baltimore, and it was our thing,” Reiter said.

“Now it has a more corporate feel to it. That doesn’t make sense.”

Then again, neither does running across the rooftops of portable toilets. But at the people’s party, there was always a sense that anything goes.

Broad Street Run

These are pictures from this year's Broad Street Run that I found on Flickr:

This is the start of the Kid's race. You can see one of the toilets on the right side of the picture.

These people were nice enough to pose in front of the toilets, even though the weather was awful!

Bike New York Recap

I meant to post about this sooner, but this week has been so crazy. I rode in the TD Bank Five Boro Bike tour this past weekend and it was a lot of fun. I was really disappointed to wake up to rain on Sunday, but it was only spitting when we got up, so I was really optimistic about the weather. We were lucky to get VIP Passes, so we were up front for the start of the Tour.

This is the start of the tour. There were 30,000 bikers. My friends were in the back of the pack of bikers and they were about two hours behind us the whole way. Those VIP passes were worth gold for the time it saved!

The tour starts around the intersection of White St and Church St. You then ride up the Avenue of the Americas to Central Park. Then you go through the park to Madison Ave. You go over the Madison Ave Bridge into Queens and the make a small loop, exiting Queens on the 3rd Ave Bridge. From there you bike down FDR Drive to the Queensboro (59th Street) Bridge.

This is FDR drive. I basically biked the entire tour with my camera in my hand, that is why I am making you all look at so many pictures. So just enjoy it!
At the entrance ramp to the bridge, they made us all stop, so I was able to get this picture. Not that glamorous as you can tell.

We biked over the bridge and into Queens. We came down this entrance ramp and to a park, under the Tri-boro bridge, where everyone had to stop. This was a really big rest stop with lots of toilets!
It poured all through Queens and Brooklyn. By the time we got to the Brooklyn Bridge I was soaked and freezing. You have the option to ride through Booklyn to the Verranzano Bridge (Staten Island) or to cross the Brooklyn Bridge back into Manhattan. I made the decision to bail out at this point. We had biked about 30+ miles at this point and my dad and I were cold and really wet.

We had to carry our bikes up stairs to the bridge and then we biked over the Brooklyn Bridge. It was really weird because you are riding on a Boardwalk on top of the cars. Kind of freaky. I was really disappointed that it was pouring at this point because I couldn't take my camera out for any pictures!

Overall, the tour was a lot of fun. It was disappointing about the weather but I still had a great time. I would recommend you sign up if you enjoy biking. It is a great way to see New York, without all the traffic!!!

Portable Potties Cushion Plane Crash

(May 2, Copied from KOMO News) - A small airplane dropping from the sky after its engine failed wound up on a cushioning bunch of portable toilets -- and the pilot was able to walk away.

Gary Mayor of the Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna 182 crashed Friday afternoon in Washington state after taking off from Thun Field, an airfield owned by Pierce County southeast of Tacoma.

Pilot Clifford Howell said his engine stopped when he was about 150 feet in the air, KOMO News of Seattle reported. Howell said he tried to make it back to the runway but came up short.

"If he had made the runway, he would have landed a lot harder than he did by impacting with those Sani-Cans and the wood pile," Pierce County Sgt. Mike Blair said, according to KOMO."It probably saved his life, I would think."

Witnesses said the plane bounced off the rows of portable toilets in a storage yard at the north end of the field, flipped, then landed upside down on a pile of wood chips.
